Barcelona, Spain – The Institut Tecnològic de Barcelona (ITB) marks a milestone in the digital transformation of education with the completion of the CERT project, an initiative that promotes the secure accreditation of vocational education diplomas and professional mobility across Europe through blockchain technology.
Developed together with Biyiud and Certifydoc, the CERT project has created a pioneering system for issuing verifiable digital credentials, aligned with the European standards of Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI), the European Skills, Competences and Occupations classification (ESCO), and the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI).
In a world where accreditation processes remain slow and vulnerable to fraud, CERT provides an innovative alternative: immutable digital diplomas and certificates, instantly verifiable and cross-border recognised, while ensuring the confidentiality of personal data. With this solution, universities, vocational training centres and companies can reduce costs, eliminate unnecessary bureaucracy and facilitate the academic and professional mobility of European citizens.
The system also integrates with the new Spanish Vocational Education and Training (VET) law, which enables learners to accumulate training and obtain higher accreditations. To manage this growing volume of certifications, CERT uses decentralised technologies and complies with the new eIDAS2 and SSI European standards. SSI grants each citizen full control over their credentials without intermediaries, strengthening privacy and digital trust.
EBSI, the first public-sector blockchain infrastructure in Europe, is at the heart of the system. Designed by the EU in 2018, EBSI aims to enhance trust in digital services by providing robust and secure verification for official documents. Moreover, integration with ESCO, the European classification of skills and occupations, ensures that the issued credentials gain labour recognition across the EU, thus boosting employability.
The CERT project has been led by the ITB Innovation team, composed of teachers and students, with the strategic support of Biyiud and Certifydoc. These partnerships have provided specialised training in blockchain, digital identity, legaltech and technical consulting, which have been key to the project’s success.
“With CERT we are taking a major step forward in educational innovation. This digital diploma system not only positions ITB as a technological benchmark, but also gives our students faster access to the European job market with secure and verifiable credentials. I would like to thank the professionalism and constant technical and consultancy support of Biyiud and Certifydoc during the execution of this project”, said Alberto Vila, Director of ITB.

ITB thus reaffirms its commitment to educational and technological innovation, offering solutions that respond to the challenges of the future.
